Burning Man 2008 » The Roarshack » Clean-Up Plan
We in the Roarshack are deeply, almost disturbingly committed to
cleaning up after ourselves. Out on the playa, we plan to employ all
the classic cleanup strategies, along with a few clever new innovations
of our own. To wit:
During the Week
We won't bring much trash to begin with — we keep small blow away-y things and excessively packaged snacks to a minimum. We will assign two camp members per day to police our site to make certain that all the stray trash or possible trash-like objects are summarily removed.
We play MOOP BINGO – where we pick up anything that crosses our path that shouldn't be there. The camper with the most points wins a back-rub, or a something rub.
We have 3 separate trash receptacles on site, for recyclables, burnables, and other. We have a solid greywater evaporation pond for the use of the campers, cleverly disguised as a plastic duck and koi pond, to dispose of waste water, showering, cooking, etc.
Of course, no digging of holes or creating of open fires or other bad non-playa-friendly activities. It wouldn’t even occur to us.
After the Week
Picture Kevin Spacey at the end of "The Usual Suspects" — that's just like our camp, except without all the gunplay and suppressed homoeroticism (ours is right out there in the open.) We're just going to vanish, without a trace, from the playa.
Everyone will initially be responsible for cleaning up their own area of the camp. We will assign individuals (imagine RVs full of plastic bags) to take the trash and recycling back to San Francisco for proper disposal. We won't take any showers or do any serious water cooking on the last day. This way our grey water pond will be empty, and it won't be a hassle after we've packed up and are ready to go. All our food will be eaten out of cans with disposable sporks on the last day to keep from having to wash the dishes. We will rigorously survey the entirety of our campsite once everything has been packed up to make sure nothing has been overlooked that doesn't belong on the playa. The last person to leave will be assigned the task of doing one final overview of the area. Additionally, we will encourage camp members to stay, if at all possible, to help with the cleanup afterwards.
Also
Everyone in the camp will be made fully and repeatedly aware of this plan before, during, and immediately after the event.
If there's anything that's not in here that ought to be, please let us know and we'll add it. We want to make sure we're doing what it takes to help you guys (and ourselves) out. Please let our point person (below), know if something is missing or amiss.
